Paris Day 3 Explore the city with a morning orientation Paris tour that includes the famous Arc de Triomphe, the Cathedral of Notre Dame, a magnificent Gothic masterpiece and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Louvre Museum, the Champs-Elysées, the Eiffel Tower, the Trocadero, the Invalides, Place des Vosges, Place Vendome, and Place de la Concorde.This afternoon, shop or window shop on the elegant Champs-Elysées or see the parts of the Louvre that you missed in the quick tour this morning. Tonight enjoy your Eiffel Tower dinner and a Paris illumination cruise on the Seine. Paris, the culmination of French culture, reveals its Gothic, Renaissance, and modern faces from the banks of the River Seine, itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the Louvre to the Eiffel Tower, and the Place de la Concorde, to the Grand and Petite Palais, the evolution of Paris unfolds before your eyes during this illumination cruise. Paris/Versailles Day 4 This morning or afternoon, you take a half-day guided tour of the lavish interior and formal gardens of the Palace and Park of Versailles, a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the Kings of France from Louis XIV to Louis XVI resided in opulence. Much-copied by monarchs of other nations, it was, at the time it was built, one of the most costly and extravagant buildings ever known to man. You can stay and explore Versailles on your own this afternoon if you wish. If you choose the morning tour of Versailles, you have time this afternoon to visit the Musee d' Orsay and/or Pont Neuf this afternoon and the charming district of Saint Germaine this evening. B |

Paris (Fashion Show, Parisian Markets, and Gourmet Shops) No visit to Paris would be complete without a tour of its famous markets displaying ingredients which are the basis of French cooking. This afternoon, walk down the steeply winding rue de Buci and rue de Seine, where small, domestic shops artistically display the freshest of produce just arrived during the night from the French provinces. The lively interaction between buyer and seller is an important ingredient in the Parisian texture of culture. Then visit world-famous cheese shops where, collectively, more than 200 types of cheeses are displayed, and tour one of the fashionable delicatessens for which Paris in known. Return to your Paris hotel this evening. B |

Paris / Alsace (via Champagne or Burgandy wine region) Day 6 Your private driver will meet you at the hotel and take you to the rental car agency either at Charles de Gaulle Airport or at Orly Airport, depending upon whether you have chosen to drive to Alsace through Champagne or through Burgundy. Driving directions, maps, and suggested itinerary will be in your trip pack. The Burgundy option will take about ten hours today or we will arrange an overnight stop en route if you wish. Otherwise, check in tonight at the hotel you have chosen from our list of featured properties in Alsace. B |

Alsace Wine Road / Kaysersberg / Ribeauvillé / Riquewihr / Ebersmu Day 7 This morning drive along the celebrated Alsatian Wine Road, which winds its way between well-tended vineyards and through a number of picture-perfect “villages fleuris”.Continue on to the enchanting town of Kaysersberg, and visit the home (now a cultural center) of the world-famous doctor, writer, philanthropist, theologian, and winner of the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Have a late lunch in the charming wine village of Ribeauvillé. In the afternoon, visit the captivating old wine town of Riquewihr with its sixteenth-century ramparts, imposing thirteenth-century gate, and lovely inner courtyards. Later, visit the Ebersmunster Abbey (the monastery of the wild boar) known for its beautiful furniture, exquisite carvings and Silbermann organ. IOn this or any day of the tour, you may want to substitute your favorite activity: Water sports, fishing, golf, tennis, horseback riding, hiking, biking, or even a hot air balloon ride over Alsace or the German Black Forest. Haut-Koenigsbourg / Colmar Day 8 Please ask us about the Alsace Christmas markets (pictured left). Alsace winter time is often cold and usually beautiful. This morning use the directions, itinerary, and map in your trip pack for a self-guided drive on the Wine Road to Haut-Koenigsbourg, situated high on a promontory above the town of Saint Hippolyte. It is a completely restored red sandstone medieval castle built on the site of a twelfth-century fortress, offering fascinating glimpses into the region’s distant past. Then drive to Colmar, a colorful, harmonious city built around a charming central maze of cobbled streets where restored half-timbered dwellings dating from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance present brightly painted façades ornate with wooden sculptures. At the Unterlinden Museum, view an outstanding collection of paintings from the Rhenan School and admire the spectacular, much-celebrated Issenheim altarpiece, which has long attracted visitors from around the globe. There are a wide range of dining options in Colmar this evening and lively night entertainment. B |

Obernai / Strasbourg Day 9 Early this morning drive to the picturesque town of Obernai and experience the festive atmosphere of the weekly market while browsing through colorful stalls bursting with regional produce and charming handcrafted items. (We will redesign your schedule to include market day in Obernai, guided by your date of departure.) This afternoon, take a cruise on the canal system of the cosmopolitan city of Strasbourg (pay 5 Euros per person at the dock). Visit the famous pink granite Gothic Cathedral of Notre Dame, begun in 1176; a lacy, fragile-looking structure topped by a soaring, 466-foot-high spire and filled with radiant light from superb twelfth-to-fourteenth-century stained glass windows. Wandering past old half-timbered houses bedecked with scarlet geraniums, explore the fairy-tale “Petite France” district, charmingly criss-crossed by narrow lanes, canals, and locks. B |
